This optical device is designed to measure the howitzer deflection angle when firing from closed positions.
The device has an illuminated grid that functions as an optical projection system.
The M1A2 has a battery-powered LED and is used with the M777 (155mm), M198 (155mm), M119 (105mm), and M109 (155mm) howitzers.
Also many howitzers no longer in use in the United States but still in use by foreign militaries.
It is known that in the USA, these M1A2 collimators are in service with the Marine Corps and were used specifically for M777 howitzers.
